Domestic Abuse and Homelessness Law Training

The Domestic Abuse Act 2021 brings some important changes to Homelessness Law, particularly around priority need. This means that there will be an inevitable shift in focus when approaching councils for help from whether domestic abuse makes someone vulnerable to whether they are being abused at all, potentially making the process very distressing for homeless people.

This training has been designed to equip professionals to understand the definition of domestic abuse from a technical perspective, how it can be evidenced and how the probability of it continuing can be assessed – all aspects of the law that will determine whether victims receive the statutory assistance they are owed.

On completion of this course you will have:

  • An awareness and basic understanding of Homelessness Legislation and how domestic abuse sits within it.
  • An understanding of the legal definitions of homelessness, priority need, intentional homelessness and local connection.
  • The information needed to know when a homeless application is appropriate.
  • A practical understanding of how to help someone make a strong application for housing assistance.
  • An awareness of other help relevant to people at risk of domestic abuse.
